Gaji Fabric

Gaji silk is a magnificent and one-of-a-kind fabric indigenous to the Indian subcontinent.

Our Gaji Silk/Mashru Silk is a handwoven fabric which is a blend of viscose and cotton. Historically, certain communities were not allowed by their religion to wear silk, so this fabric was woven for them. The word 'Mashru' means permitted in Arabic. 

Mashru is made using the satin weave by interweaving silk and mercerized cotton yarns, resulting in a fabric whose surface is like silk, whereas the underside is cotton. The intertwining strengthens the fabric.

Gajji silk is used to make a range of clothing, including saris and lehengas. It is extremely long-lasting, making it suitable for items that will be worn frequently.

The fabric is also well-known for its ability to hold its colour and shape over time. It also washes well. Because of these features, Gaji silk clothes are frequently passed down from generation to generation.

This fabric is mostly produced in Punjab and western India.
